Urn Models and Yao's Formula
نویسندگان
چکیده
Yao's formula is one of the basic tools in any situation where one wants to estimate the number of blocks to be read in answer to some query. We show that such situations can be modelized by probabilistic urn models. This allows us to fully characterize the distribution probability of the number of selected blocks under uniformity assumptions, and to consider extensions to non-uniform block probabilities. We also obtain a computationnally eecient approximation of Yao's formula.

P´olya Urn Models and Connections to Random Trees: A Review
This paper reviews P´olya urn models and their connection to random trees. Basic results are presented, together with proofs that underly the historical evolution of the accompanying thought process. Extensions and generalizations are given according to chronology: • P´olya-Eggenberger’s urn • Bernard Friedman’s urn • Generalized P´olya urns • Extended urn schemes • Invertible urn schemes ...
متن کاملP´olya-Type Urn Models with Multiple Drawings
We investigate the distribution, mean value, variance and some limiting properties of an urn model of white and red balls under random multiple drawing (either with or without replacement) when the number of white and red balls added follows a schedule that depends on the number of white balls chosen in each drawing.
متن کاملA Modified Pólya Urn Process and an Index for Spatial Distributions with Volume Exclusion
Spatial data sets can be analysed by counting the number of objects in equally sized bins. The bin counts are related to the Pólya urn process, where coloured balls (for example, white or black) are removed from the urn at random. If there are insufficient white or black balls for the prescribed number of trials, the Pólya urn process becomes untenable. In this case, we modify the Pólya urn pro...
متن کاملAsymptotic normality of urn models for clinical trials with delayed response
Response-adaptive design involves the sequential selection of design points chosen depending on the outcomes at previously selected design points. The response-adaptive design has been extensively studied in the literature; see Rosenberger (1996), Flournoy and Rosenberger (1995) and Hu and Ivanova (2004) for details. An important family of adaptive designs can be developed from the generalized ...
متن کاملPolya’s Urn and the Beta-bernoulli Process
The Polya’s Urn model is notable within statistics because it generalizes the binomial, hypergeometric, and beta-Bernoulli (beta-binomial) distributions through a single formula. In addition, Polya’s Urn is a multivariate distribution whose variables are exchangeable but not independent. This paper introduces basic probability and Bayesian concepts in order to prove these properties.
